Walk for Water
When you walk for water, you discover what it is like for people in the toughest places. Around the world, millions of women and children walk one to four miles daily to collect water for their families. After fetching water, they must carry their 50-pound water jug back home. If the water they collect is not clean, they are at risk for deadly waterborne diseases.
Together we can raise awareness about one of the most significant sources of suffering on earth — a lack of clean water. During a water walk, participants carry a five-gallon bucket of water for one to three miles. They can also invite their family and friends to sponsor their walk and bring clean water to a community in need.
FAQs
Yes! We will work with you throughout the entire planning process. We will give you marketing and promotional materials. And we will provide you with a designated Unto staff member the day of your event.
If you would like to help raise not only awareness but also funds for clean water, we suggest allowing at least three to four weeks so you can plan and so participants can get their friends and family involved to sponsor their walk.
We suggest asking your biggest fans! Friends and family are a great place to start. Ask people in your local church community to sponsor you. Share your walk on social media so friends can give online too.
If your campus partners with an international Cru team where Unto works, we can often make arrangements for the funds you raise to bring water to a specific country or community. If your group or congregation is passionate about a country or region, we can also suggest a project that fits your needs. We will work together to select a project that works best for your group to fund. We have a variety of options including drilling new wells, repairing broken ones and providing water filters.
Of course! The goal of water walks is to not only bring clean water to the toughest places but to also raise awareness about the suffering people face. Your walk helps others learn about the challenges people face and how they can make a difference.
If you have a local Cru campus leader, we encourage you to recruit them to help you host a water walk. We also welcome student leaders to host a walk on their campus. Churches and corporations can also host a water walk. Talk with your pastor or HR director to get started and then loop us in so we can help.
We definitely suggest getting permission from your campus. Normally, the Dean of Students is a good place to start.
Some cities also require permission and/or a permit. Our Unto staff are happy to help you determine the permissions and/or permits needed. We can also help you navigate the process so you can successfully host a water walk.
