Mudiwa is a mom to a “differently abled” child. People in her village used to blame her for her daughter’s condition and asked her what she did wrong to bring this suffering upon her family. Others told her to keep her daughter at home and to never take her out in public. Many viewed her and her family as cursed.
Last year, a historic drought devastated crops across Zambia and Zimbabwe. Because many families are dependent on agriculture for their food and livelihood, food insecurity rose significantly. Families like Mudiwa’s, who were already struggling, were especially impacted.
Thanks to generous partners, local Unto® staff were able to deliver meals to those who do not have enough to eat. They also distributed other essential supplies. Our field team commented that the food came at just the right time and was truly a gift from God.
Mudiwa was so grateful for the gift of meals. She is part of a support group for mothers of children with disabilities. Several years ago, our local staff team formed the group to help families with children who face physical or mental challenges. They provide the families with meals and other resources. They also share the gospel.
As a part of the group, Mudiwa receives the help and support she needs to raise her daughter. She has also responded to the message of Jesus! She is growing in her faith and no longer feels shame over her situation. Her and her daughter’s suffering has been eased. Their dignity has been restored.
Thanks to the generosity of people like you, Mudiwa now knows her daughter has been created in the image of God. She is able to pass this truth on to her daughter and many others — telling them about the hope she has found.
