Hunger is always devastating — but when it crosses a defined threshold, it becomes famine. According to the global food-security authority, Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), famine is officially declared when all three of these conditions are met:
- At least 20% of households are facing an extreme lack of food.
- At least 30% of children under the age of five are suffering acute malnutrition.
- The daily death rate from starvation or malnutrition-related causes reaches at least 2 people per 10,000 (or 4 children per 10,000) per day.
In short: when widespread food access collapses, child nutrition plummets, and deaths mount — famine is declared.
